Havana, Cuba, is in 1958 een bruisende stad waar veel plezier te beleven is voor wie zich dat kan veroorloven. Maar ondergronds verenigen de tegenstanders van dictator Fulgencio Batista zich. De welgestelde familie Fellove behoort tot de eerste groep; oudste zoon Fico is zelfs eigenaar van El Tropico, de mooiste nachtclub van de stad. Toch wint de revolutionaire gedachte het van de rijkdom, want één voor één laten Fico's broers zich winnen voor de zaak van Fidel Castro en Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Fico vreest voor de toekomst van zijn club onder het nieuwe regime en worstelt met de vraag hoe hij zijn familie en grote liefde moet behouden. Samen met zijn komische huisvriend en schrijver moet hij toezien hoe de Cubaanse cultuur vervaagt en mensen op slag veranderen. Fico wordt meegesleept door de ingrijpende ontwikkelingen van zijn land en raakt veel dieper dan gewild betrokken bij de revolutie.
